Tradition of film animation started in Banja Luka at the end of the sixties of the 20th century and culminated in 1971., when Banja Luka hosted The May Festival
of Animated Film BANJA LUKA 71, first of its kind in ex Yugoslavia.
In the years to come The May Festival was transformed in movie manifestation named The Festival of Filmmaking. After several years The May Festival ceased to exist and the screenings of short animated films in Banja Luka's cinemas stopped too.
In the following years, in the city on the river Vrbas were showed animated films from around the world.
Interest for animated film in Banja Luka was renewed in 2005. by the group of young film workers from the Association for Visual Arts FENIX ART.
FENIX ART showed the great retrospective of "Zagreb School of Animated Film" with 44 films of world famous school of animation. Popularization of short form of animated film was continued on the revues, where more then 300 animated films were showed ("Days of Zagreb School of Animated Film"-2005,
"Revue of Animated Film"-2006 and "Days of Animated Film" - 2007).
International Festival of Animated Film BANJA LUKA 2008. in organization of Association for Visual Arts FENIX ART represents historical continuity of film animation in Banja Luka, which has it roots in The May Festival of Animated Film held in 1971.

DECISION
about awards at the First International Animated Film Festival Banjaluka 2008:
1. GRAND PRIX of the Festival goes to the film REFRENY/REFRAINS, directed by Wiola Sowa. Refreny/Refrains is a delicate, poetic film, whose animation language reaches the highest poetical level. The Jury also stresses artistic and dramaturgical qualities of the film.
2. Special award of the Jury for creativity and artistic expression goes to the film TOLERANCIJA/TOLERANCE directed by Ivan Ramadan. The Jury stresses sophisticated computer animation serving as a strong message directed against hatred and prejudices in our civilization
3.Awards for animation techniques go to the films:
- Award for the best animated drawing goes to the film Ein sonniger tag/A Sunny Day directed by Gil Alkabetz. Jury stresses extraordinary animation and fresh humor for children.
- Award for the best animated painting goes to the movie BETON directed by Ariel Belinco and Michael Faust. Distinct atmosphere, coherent performance and strong anti-war message characterize this film.
- Award for the best 3D animation goes to the film RED RABBIT directed by Egmont Mayer. Film is fine psychological study of human characters with surreal humor.
Jury also gives two special awards to the films NASTUP/PERFORMANCE directed by Katarine O’ Hearn and MATOPOS by Stephanie Machuret. PERFORMANCE is a classical puppet animation, psychological study of simple and strong structure while MATOPOS excites with its great design and atmosphere.
The Jury reached a decision unanimously. Jerzy Kucia abstained from voting on the film REFRAINS and Rastko Ćirić abstained from voting on the film PREFORMANCE because their names were mentioned at the switchboards of the above mentioned films.
