Grand competition program 4 Bad River Moze Mertens / The Netherlands / 3min 20sec / 2025

Synopsis

In the silence of a dark night, a lone figure drives deep into an ancient forest. Without words, the journey continues on foot, while a black crow relentlessly shadows her. As dawn nears, the boundary of trees gives way to a cliff overlooking empty meadows and a distant village. An otherworldly encounter unfolds, where the world blurs, marked by burning trees, shifting shadows, and dancing phantoms. This hand-drawn short animated film is a journey where ancient darkness fades, and new strength emerges beneath a familiar horizon.

Biografija režisera

Moze Mertens (1996) is an independent artist from The Netherlands. She studied Interactive Media Design at The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, where her graduation project was granted an exhibition spot at The Bad Feminist expo in Melkweg Amsterdam. In 2021 Moze moved to Vancouver to study Classical Animation at The Vancouver Film School, from which she graduated with honours. Her animated short ‘Alledoags’ was selected in 2022 for the Ottawa International Animation Festival for the student competition. After working at the film school in Vancouver, she went fully independent and works as freelancing animator, graphic designer, screen printer and painter and is based in The Netherlands again. In her work, Moze creates stories that take you from our everyday life into a slumbering upside down version of reality. Moze uses mixed media to create her work; hand-drawn paper animated scenes, silk screening, painting or fully digital created works. As an artist she works on independent projects - either created and funded by herself or joined with and by other independent artists.
